On Line Degrees
On line degrees have changed a great deal in the last few years. There was a time when people would have been a bit wary of following a degree program on line. I was recently re-watching a movie from right around the turn of the millennium, and one of the characters made a derogatory comment about his friend’s choice to pursue his education with an online program. That screenwriter must be eating his words now!
The fact of the matter is that many of our current educational activities will be shifted into an online environment. If you have been to school in the last few years or if you have children, you know that this is true. Even in elementary schools, students are beginning to learn at least partly in an online environment. Nearly gone are those ancient film projectors and slide projectors that we watched as children while we tried to stay awake in the dark, sleep-inducing room. Today, the internet and digital video make it possible for teachers to use all kinds of information in their classrooms. The same can be said for higher education in the virtual classroom.
There are different ways that higher education programs are shifting their curriculum to an online environment. Some courses are followed entirely online, using highly advanced video conferencing equipment so that you see your fellow students and your professor on the screen. This is much like being in a traditional classroom, only you can be sitting in your own home. Others simply use chat rooms or forums to share information, ideas, and assignments. One thing is clear: on line degrees are here to stay!
